My current practice is unique, and NOT a traditional medical practice. The Feldenkrais Method of physical therapy, upon which my evaluations and treatments are primarily based, cannot be learned in Medical School. The Feldenkrais training is a separate 4-year training program which I completed in the mid-1990s.
I treat acute and chronic pain and disability using this alternative medicine approach. My approach is based on our current understanding of the processes involved in learning movement skills. It is a systematic approach to improving human movement and general functioning. I use simple, gentle movement lessons to reorganize posture, flexibility, strength and coordination, and relieve pain.
My therapy is based on the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, an Israeli physicist and engineer. His novel approach to pain relief treatment and disability uses our nervous system's capacity for self-organizing and self-regulating. People can learn to improve the quality of their actions, thus creating new movement possibilities. Improving movement quality and effectiveness allows the body to function more efficiently. This efficiency creates environments for chronic pain and injuries to heal, and opportunities for athletes and others to excel.
Most treatment sessions are based on developmental movements and routine functional activities, e.g. reaching, bending, lying to sitting, and turning. Other sessions are based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. There are endless possibilities for learning, and treatments vary in intention and complexity, and are personally designed by me for all levels of movement ability.
What will my first Treatment be like?
Your first session will last about 90 minutes. Bring or wear comfortable clothes. Tight workout clothes, as well as dresses for women, are discouraged. After reviewing your new client information form, a history of your problem will be discussed. A structural and functional examination will be done to assess the potential causes of your pain, and your body’s general level of organization for movement. Your particular pain and problem(s) will be the focus as we decide on the best course of action to permanently relieve your pain.
Your pain relief session will last about 45 minutes. You will receive both hands-on work, as well as perform gentle movements yourself with my direct supervision. If you prefer to move toward pain relief and improve your abilities more quickly, homework in the form of gentle pain relief audios or videos can be used to continue and accelerate your pain relief treatment progress at home.
